18 August 2022 (Thursday) – Fire safety and prevention is certainly one of the essential aspects in every engineering practice.
The School of Aerospace Engineering of USM hosted a seminar of “Taklimat Pencegahan Kebakaran” by Pertubuhan Pencegah Kebakaran Kuala Lumpur (PPKKL) in collaboration with Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia). The one-and-a-half-hour seminar was held in Bilik Seminar, PPK Aeroangkasa and delivered by an enthusiastic speaker, Mr. Jeffery Chin from PPKKL.
The staff of School of Aerospace Engineering was briefed about the statistics on fire accidents in Malaysia and some insights were identified on primary root cause of the fatalities in these accidents. After delving into some of the case studies, it was revealed that most cases can be prevented with proper precautions. Mr. Jeffrey constantly highlighted the significance of the implementation of these critical preventive actions to save precious lives, as the heartless fire never discriminates and there are only heart-breaking ends to the victims.
Besides the timely reminders of the basic firefighting techniques, the speaker also shared some useful tips for anyone who faces a fire in various situations. “We must have both the knowledge and the weapon to fight fire,” said Mr. Jeffery before further explain the importance to be well-equipped with the tools for both preventive and corrective measures. This is indeed a fruitful experience when Mr. Jeffrey helped to further affirmed our knowledge on the common public misconceptions regarding fire accidents in the Q and A session.
Before the session ended, the Deputy Dean of Academic of School of Aerospace Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Zulfaa presented a souvenir to Mr. Jefferey as a token of appreciation of his time and sharing of knowledge.
