USM Aerospace Lecturer Awarded Fellowship On Space Development Programme

Dr Norilmi Karman Fellowship

NIBONG TEBAL, 27 May 2023 – Dr. Norilmi Amilia Ismail is back in the limelight again.

This time around, the lecturer from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Aerospace Engineering has been awarded the highly competitive global fellowship, the Karman Fellowship for 2023.

The Karman Fellowship serves as the flagship programme of the non-profit foundation that actively promotes cooperation through action, in engaging with visionary leaders who are recognised for their outstanding accomplishment in the field of space and their motivation to increase their impact for the betterment of the space sector and beyond.

15 Fellows for 2023, representing 12 nationalities and 6 continents will be joining the growing network of influential Karman Alumni that includes 45 Fellows and 100 top-shortlisted ‘Karman Pioneers’ from previous promotions, coming from startups, cultural, venture capital, research, space agency and industry sectors alike.

Norilmi, who is the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SpaceIn Sdn. Bhd. (a spin-off company of USM specialising in small satellite manufacturing and Satellite IoT services), was one of the selected 15 Fellows from over 300 considered applicants worldwide.

According to Norilmi, selected Karman Fellows will participate in a programme that is designed around three key pillars namely leadership, dialogue and action, whereby they will be invited to meet with global leaders, strengthening their relationships with one another and engaging in strategic discussions with regard to the future of space.

“The Fellows will engage on global issues that are aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as they have recognised the potential of space technologies in addressing these challenges as well as the specific issues within the space sector.

“As a ‘space-for-impact’ foundation, the Karman project supports the Fellows in addressing six key Impact themes namely Sustainability, Education, Empowerment, Cooperation, Science and Inspiration,” said Norilmi.

Norilmi added by saying that she is grateful for this opportunity and she hopes that this fellowship could be the avenue to strengthen her network in the field of space.

The Karman Project additionally continues to build a strong network of global partners and sponsors who are equally dedicated to supporting the Karman Fellows and the wider community.

Partnership activities will commence in July 2023, with the Karman Project set to co-host the third edition of the Smart Space MBA Elective at the University of Oxford, pursuant to their partnership with the University of Oxford’s Space Initiative that was announced in November 2021.
